Marketing Hall of Fame announces 2015 Inductees!

I am delighted to share the news of the 4 marketers are being inducted into the 2015 Marketing Hall of Fame

Ogilvy & Mather’s Shelly Lazarus, Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard, Nike’s Trevor Edwards and Prophet/UC Berkeley’s David Aaker Selected as AMA’s 2015 Marketing Hall of Fame® Inductees. In the words of Don Sexton,

“We established the Marketing Hall of Fame as a forum for the marketing community to recognize an extremely select group of our colleagues for the many brilliant ways they have advanced our profession,” said Don Sexton, NYAMA president and professor of marketing, Columbia Business School. “We are extremely proud to celebrate the contributions to marketing made by David Aaker, Yvon Chouinard, Trevor Edwards and Shelly Lazarus, who truly represent the pinnacle of leadership and innovation in the field.”

This year’s stellar selection committee consisted of David W. Almy, CEO, Marketing Research Association (MRA); Gayle Fuguitt, CEO, Advertising Research Foundation (ARF); Nancy Hill, CEO, 4As; Bob Liodice, CEO, Association of National Advertisers (ANA);Kendall Nash, president, Qualitative Research Consultants Association; Bruce Nelson, former vice chair, Omnicom, and Earl Taylor, CMO, Marketing Science Institute.  The selection committee was coordinated by Don Sexton, NYAMA president-elect and professor of marketing, Columbia University.

Philip Kotler on the Marketing Hall of Fame

Did you know that chairman of the nominating committee for one of the first Marketing Hall of Fame inductions was Philip Kotler?  Yes, back in 1995, when he wrote,

The two most important assets of any company, brand value and people value, are unfortunately not on the books.

While brands have slowly made there way onto the financial reports, marketers are still not on the books as valued and valuable resources. While there are awards for campaigns or for short-term successes, e.g. “Marketing of the Year”, there is no recognition for the people who have made tremendous contributions to marketing overall, and over a number of years.

We are changing that.

This year the Marketing Hall of Fame is inducting 3 individuals who have shown their innovation, leadership, inspiration and success over time, and often across multiple disciplines. This year we are celebrating brilliance in marketing, by focusing on the people behind the brands.

Marketing Hall of Fame to the people who make outstanding contributions to the field of marketing and are inspiring and educating the next generation of marketers.

Today I was in touch with Philip Kotler about his past role in the Marketing Hall of Fame. Phil Kotler wrote to me,

I am glad to hear that you are reviving the Marketing Hall of Fame and centering it on awarding people.

Time To Do Good

Here is an opportunity to contribute to bettering the world around us.

First is contributing directly to the Mayor’s Fund for the Advancement of New York.  This organization has been carrying forward the tasks of  recovering from hurricane Sandy.  The storm is no longer front page news but that doesn’t mean the urgency is any less for the many people in this area.  I was reminded of this yesterday when I was down at the Office of the Mayor for a meeting.

Second, the New York American Marketing Association  is making donations to the Mayor’s Fund for every registration to our annual holiday celebration.

This year it is on Tuesday, December 4th, from 6 to 8 pm.  JWT has graciously hosting the event for a second year in a row — a very special thanks to Erin Johnson for making that happen.  You can sign up for the event and make additional donations at nyama.org.  It’s a good cause and you’ll have a good time.  What could be better?

NYAMA Holiday Event

It Is A New NYAMA

Every once in a while I interrupt this blog with invitations to events or to drop names.  This is one of those times.  So I’ll temporarily drop my role as CEO of Verse Group and switch into my role as the President of the NYAMA.  I’m doing that here because, well….I don’t have a blog yet at the nyama.org…

But when I DO, I’ll write the following:

The old way of marketing doesn’t make sense in a changed world.  And at the New York American Marketing Association we realized that our old way of communicating with our members and the greater marketing community doesn’t make sense in a changed world.  We’ve taken the several important steps forward.

In addition to our Linked-in and Twitter presence, we’ve (finally) upgraded the website, making it easier to see the NYAMA events that our programming committee has developed for the coming weeks, next month, next few months.  In fact, we have events planned from now through June of 2012, thanks to Sarah Linden, Lee Hornick and everyone else on the programming team.

In addition to the NYAMA events, you can also find an aggregation of marketing events across the New York City area.  This is something rather special.

In a world of silos, where each organization becomes more and more specialized, the NYAMA is going in the opposite direction.  We are opening up the world of marketing, opening up the opportunities to learn from more people in more areas.

Marketing extends across design, social media, consumer research, public relations, mobile media, media research, advertising, reputation management, organizational design, employee culture, product innovation, managing outside agencies, measuring ROI.  That is why the NYAMA is opening up all of these areas for everyone to discover, to explore, to understand and to see if they make sense for you.

That is why the NYAMA is organizing events across more areas than anyone else.

That is why we having a monthly “meet the author series” with people as varied as Tony Hseih, Jack Trout, David Rogers and, at the pre-dawn hour of 8 am on November 16th you can have an intimate breakfast with Steven Rosenbaum to discuss his new book “Curation Nation”

Off to the Effies

Last night was the annual Effies award dinner, so I dug out my tux and put on a bowtie.  On my way over to Cipriani I was wondering why I don’t wear these to client meetings.  It’s fun to dress up.

The place was packed, the event sold out.  More than 750 people attended and many others were unable to buy tickets in the first place.

I also saw the Effies from a completely new perspective.  In the past I had been one of the ad agency people sitting at a table wondering if we won bronze, silver or gold.  The tension was gone this year since I was attending in my role as a board member of the NYAMA.  That made the whole evening more enjoyable.

One friend asked me, “So what does ‘effie’ stand for?

Advertising effectiveness, I explained.  To which he responded, “It must have been a short evening since advertising is less and less effective.”

Phil Kotler’s co-author John Caslione to speak in NYC on 4/14

I’m delighted to say that John Caslione, co-author (with Philip Kotler) of Chaotics will be speaking in NYC on Wednesday, 4/14.

The book itself provides a solid framework for handling the current economic turbulence.  Kotler and Caslione suggest that the major upheaval that we are going through is not the only turbulence for business.  Even as the economy recovers companies will find it necessary to reinvent how they market since the old tried-and-true methods won’t work as well in the future as they did in the past.

That’s actually quite a remarkable statement to hear from Philip Kotler.  Here’s the fellow who has literally written the textbook, or rather textbooks, on marketing and he’s saying that what was taught about the past may not apply in the future.  He never stops looking for ways to evolve and improve marketing.

John is a very dynamic and entertaining speaker so I highly recommend this event.
